My name is Markiyan Prokhasko, and I live in Lviv, Ukraine. I hold a BA in History and an MA in Journalism. My work has appeared in several media outlets, and I have also contributed individual pieces to various publishing houses. In early 2018, I published my first book.

Antarctic Expedition
To facilitate my expedition to Antarctica, I began a fundraising campaign in the fall of 2018, actively seeking support from sponsors and donors. With the permission of the National Antarctic Scientific Center allowing me to stay at the Vernadsky Ukrainian Antarctic research station, I then participated in the 2019 Antarctic expedition.

Dream of Antarctica
Following my return to Ukraine, my activities centered around Antarctica. These included the creation of a dedicated website, the production of various publications, the maintenance of blogs and social media channels, the organization of events aimed at popularizing Antarctic themes in Ukraine, and the writing of a popular science book, “A Dream of Antarctica.” This book was published in early 2022, a period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the imminent full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. It later achieved recognition as a finalist for the Yuriy Shevelov Prize, a finalist for the UNESCO City of Literature Lviv Prize, and a “Radio Kultura” award.

Antarctica in Audio
Listen to Markiyan Prokhasko’s interview about Antarctica and his book “A Dream of Antarctica” on Danielle Hampson’s show, The Authors Show, USA (in English).

I call on publishing industry professionals who deal with foreign rights to consider “A Dream About Antarctica” for translation.

Together with Serhii Trukhimovych, I co-founded a podcast on “Lviv Radio” in 2022, and it aired until early 2024.

I also participated in an audio series for the major Ukrainian media platform Megogo Audio.

Antarctica in English and Spanish
In 2023, “A Dream of Antarctica” was included in the Essence of Ukraine project by Headway. As part of this project, summaries of approximately thirty books by Ukrainian authors were created in English and Spanish to introduce Ukrainian literature to readers from different countries.

Barchans
In the summer of 2024, I participated in an online residency in the USA for writers and artists, as a result, a chapter from the book about Antarctica was published in English.

Arctic
Antarctica took a special place in my life. Nevertheless, I dream of visiting many more countries to write my new books. In late 2022, I traveled to the Svalbard archipelago, Norway (Arctic), at the invitation of writers to gather information for future texts and podcasts.

In addition, you can listen to a podcast focusing on the Arctic, though it’s currently only in Ukrainian. You can find it on YouTube, where English subtitles are available.
Books

This book attempts, without claiming exhaustiveness, to synthesize and convey to the reader the holistic world of Antarctica — a cold, ice-bound, uninhabited, and still largely unexplored land. Immerse yourself in a journey through the wondrous world of ice and snow, aided by the region’s unique landscapes, extraordinary human adventures, the stories of daring pioneers, incredible scientific research, threatening global issues, the beauty of living pristine nature, and vivid sensations during an ocean voyage. At the heart of the book are the author’s firsthand impressions from fulfilling a lifelong dream and embarking on a captivating journey to the Ukrainian Antarctic Vernadsky research base.
